Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to word associations. Ford was interested in the field of acting during her teenage years and she joined National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor choice for this school. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place at the third time she applied for and was awarded an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime, she had already made her TV debut on the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. However, Tate quickly began gaining attention for her stand-up comic, which she added to her show in 1996.
